Today there are new driving factors to develop floating runways. Growing cities with limited space could benefit from moving airports offshore. Remote tourist destinations need better access, but increasing environmental awareness calls for infrastructure with minimal impact. Improvements in oil and gas technology is taking installations further offshore than ever, and they still require reliable access. If a proven method of constructing floating runways was to become economically viable, the applications of such technology are undoubtedly many.
