Extensive loose sand deposits were identified beneath the Lance Creek dam which could potentially liquefy and fail the dam in a large earthquake. URS designed a Deep Soil Mixing solution to strengthen the sand to enable any earthquake damage to the dam to be maintained at an acceptable level. This technique has rarely been used for this application internationally and had not been used previously in Australia.
