Large Scale Water Saving Initiative - The Barren Box Swamp Project

Murrumidgee Irrigation Area, NSW

One of the largest water infrastructure projects in regional Australia and the first to be completed with the specific aim of returning water to the environment. Features include: 20,000ML of water for use without impact on any irrigator's entitlements; restoration of more natural flow regimes to two local ephemeral wetland systems; continuation of sustainable irrigation in the area; and innovative design techniques to allow use of highly dispersive soils in the construction of storage embankments.
